Bumblebee Jasper is found on the island of Bali, near the town of Garut, Indonesia. It is collected by locals near hot vents of an active volcano called Mount Papandayan. The peak is around 8,700 feet high, which is one of the tallest volcanoes in Indonesia. This mineral was only recently discovered in the 1990’s.
Bumblebee Jasper is a complex calcium carbonate mineral with inclusions of arsenic and manganese oxides. The banding and layering, which resembles a common bumblebee, is caused by inclusions of sulfur, calcium & aragonite , orpiment & Realgar, and pyrite. Since then, this mineral has yet to be discovered anywhere else on Earth and geologists don’t expect to find another deposit of it anytime soon. This is an extremely rare occurrence in nature that simply doesn’t happen!
