Petrified wood is a fossil.  It forms when plant material is buried and protected from decay due to oxygen and organisms. It takes millions of years for petrified wood to form.

Some things that can protect and cover the wood include layers of mud, soil, ash from volcanoes and other materials. Without oxygen, the wood cannot rot.

Then, groundwater rich in dissolved solids flows through the sediment, at times replacing the original plant material with silica, calcite, pyrite, or another inorganic material such as opal.  It forms a stone replica of the original. 

 This process is so precise that tree rings, bark and even the cell structure can still be seen. The different colors in Petrified Wood are caused by different minerals in the water!
